Work package 1: Networking

Work package WP1 is responsible for the “groundwork” in UbiSec&Sens. It is intended for the development of a set of essential network mechanisms to ensure the correct functioning of the WSN in the bootstrap and the main operating phases. Specifically in this work package we address the following topics.

  • Routing in volatile environments
In this area we develop secure routing protocols which will enable network connectivity in the bootstrap as well as in the main operating phases. This work is conducted in conjunction with the research on formal security analysis methodology for WSN routing protocols in work package WP2.

  • Flexible routing and in-network processing
We investigate a possibility for routing protocols to support in-network processing and cluster formation natively.

  • Aggregator node election protocols
In WSNs the election of aggregation nodes for particular period of time is needed to optimally balance the energy consumption over the network. We develop an aggregator node election protocol which will be used for the concealed data aggregation as well as for the distributed data storage.

  • Reliable and efficient transport for WSNs
Reliability is one of the major characteristics that our WSN architecture should provide. Depending on the usage scenario and the operating phase the reliability requirements on data transfer are different. We work on designing transport protocols with different levels of reliability. Our research addresses reliability both on MAC and on the transport layers.

  • Network self-organization and self-repair
Network self-organization and self-maintenance are the essential properties of WSN. In many cases it is assumed that once deployed the WSN should operate autonomously without a need for human intervention. We develop mechanisms for WSN self-organization in the bootstrap phase as well as advanced self-healing mechanisms for the main operating phase.
