Work package 4: Integration
The objective of the Integration workpackage is to integrate the different modules developed in the other WP and to prepare demonstrators in different application areas:
Vehicular WSN prototype
In co-operation with the IST project Daidalos II a WSN prototype shall be developed. Via the
Daidalos service architecture the WSN monitors road information and transmits them to the software of an on-board unit from a vehicle. The expected size of the WSN is 15-25 nodes which is a realistic scale with respect to the envisioned scenario. This prototype requires that the Daidalos service architecture is available in 2008.
Agriculture WSN prototype
A WSNs prototype shall be developed to evaluate the suitability of the security and reliability
concepts for agriculture applications. The relevant components from the UbiSec&Sens. security
toolbox are applied to the sensor nodes supporting this scenario. Especially components for a
distributed storage of monitored data shall be incorporated since in this scenario reading monitored
data cannot be expected to happen online. A WSN of 50-100 nodes will be rolled-out for one month
within a vineyard of a non-funded partner (vineyard, Pfalz). This roll-out shall validate the robustness and self-healing characteristics of an UbiSec&Sens developed WSN under real-world conditions. The security and reliability features which will be demonstrated are system robustness, self-healing and in-network processing in a medium sized WSN. Aggregation based on discrepancy monitoring will also be shown.
Homeland Security WSN prototype
A WSNs prototype shall be developed to evaluate the suitability of this technology and developed
algorithms for Homeland Security applications. It shall use the necessary components of the
UbiSec&Sens security toolbox. Sensorial equipment in the deployed WSN nodes shall consist of biochemical and temperature sensors. WSN communications shall be based on a suitable radiofrequency technology. The prototype shall support the access to sensor data by users located in an infrastructure network. In this case, special sink nodes will have the functionality of gateways between the WSN and infrastructure network. The WSN itself will be in the range of 15-25 nodes performing in-network processing. Security features range from a concealed data aggregation of discrepancy values, over the integration of authentication and re-recognition schemes to plausibility checks and secure routing approaches.
Demonstrator Validation
This summarises the “lessons learnt” during the WP4 prototype activities. In particular this report evaluates to what degree the UbiSec&Sens toolbox concept was successful in supporting the security and reliability requirements of the three investigated WSN applications. Also the document will present what are the necessary next steps in the field of WSN security and communication. Careful recommendations will be presented to the European Commission.
